Zep (and its Graphiti graph engine) is a capable, benchmark-strong memory system. But self-hosting changed: Zep's full Community Edition was deprecated, so self-hosting now means running the Graphiti engine plus your own graph database (Neo4j, FalkorDB, or Kuzu). If you want to own the whole product without standing up a graph DB — on plain Postgres — that's where RememberOS fits. Honest comparison; where we can't verify Zep's current behaviour we say so.
| Capability | RememberOS | Zep / Graphiti |
|---|---|---|
| Self-host the whole product | yes | CE deprecated; self-host Graphiti engine only |
| Data store to operate | PostgreSQL + pgvector (one DB) | Graphiti + Neo4j / FalkorDB / Kuzu |
| EU-hosted managed option | Germany / Hetzner | Zep Cloud is US (SOC2/HIPAA); verify regions |
| Graph memory — current-truth supersession | benchmarked | temporal knowledge graph |
| Bring-your-own model / DB / storage | self-managed when self-hosting Graphiti | |
| Published DPA / GDPR self-service | see vendor | |
| Free tier | $0, no card | ~1,000 credits/mo |
| Paid tier (comparable) | $12/mo flat | Flex from $25/mo (credit-based) |
Facts as of June 2026 from public sources (getzep.com, Graphiti on GitHub, third-party comparisons) — verify with the vendor. Graphiti is genuinely strong; this page is about the self-host and residency model, not the engine's quality.
Can you still self-host Zep? Not the full app — the Community Edition was deprecated. You can self-host the Graphiti engine plus your own graph DB. RememberOS self-hosts as a whole product on Postgres.
Is there a Zep alternative without a graph database? Yes — RememberOS uses Postgres + pgvector and does supersession in-database, so there's no separate graph DB to operate.
Is there an EU-hosted Zep alternative? Yes — RememberOS is EU-hosted (Germany) with a published DPA, plus full self-host.
